Teme Leisure recognises that the operations of all our centres will have a direct impact on the environment; and that there is a need to protect the environment and use natural resources prudently in our facilities.
Teme Leisure’ aim is to reduce this effect on the environment, whilst making the use of energy throughout its sites more efficient and cost effective. We aim to ensure that sustainability is a key part of our future service development plans and work together with the landlord / Local Authority (Shropshire Council) to assist with their ‘Climate Change Strategy 2020’ of being carbon-neutral by 2030.
In order to help protect the environment, Teme Leisure is committed to the following;
Reducing our Carbon Footprint by:
- Actively monitoring energy usage in order to highlight areas in which we are able to improve and initiating an appropriate response.
- Work to best practice and guidance as issued by governing bodies such as the Carbon Trust.
- Install LED lighting to all areas of the building (internal and external)
- Install lighting sensors within our facilities, so far as reasonably practical, in order to reduce energy costs when an area is not in use.
- Ensure that our buildings operate within the nationally recommended industry standards and ensure any unnecessary heating/ air conditioning appliances are switched off when not required.
- Installation of Solar PV at South Shropshire Leisure Centre
- Installation of swimming pool cover at South Shropshire Leisure Centre
- Installation of Smart motor technology to Air Handling Units to replace existing uncontrollable motors
- Installation of Sodium Hypochlorite (salt) dosing system to replace existing HTH chlorine dosing system
- Carbon footprint review of suppliers and contractors to lower impact where possible
Management of Waste Products:
- Recycling of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminium cans.
- Use of scrap paper for notes etc, rather than utilising ‘fresh’ paper for passing trivial information.
- Work towards sustainable integrated waste management, reducing waste and maximising the amount of reuse, recovery and recycling of materials.
- Dispose of all waste in the correct manner in order to comply with The Control of Pollution (Special Waste) Regulations 1980 and in accordance with The Chemical (Hazard Information and Packaging) Regulations 1992 and The Environmental Act 1990.
- Storage of all bloods, bodily fluids, bandaging etc. in the appropriate bins and arrange for their collection and disposal by a licenced, specialist contractor.
- Carry out COSHH (Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health) assessments for each chemical used throughout all facilities, and wherever possible, reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous materials.
Travel
- Conduct meetings where possible online via ‘Microsoft Teams’ rather than face to face to reduce travel.
- Electric company car to replace previous combustion engine model.
- If travelling between sites, we will endeavour to reduce the number of journeys made and ensure lift sharing is enforced when reasonably practicable.
Training
- Conduct ‘Carbon Literacy’ training for two identified senior staff who will be responsible for the implementation, development and monitoring of the Environmental policy and actions for Teme Leisure.
- Educate staff of the importance of good environmental management and inform customers of actions and Teme Leisure commitment to carbon reduction.
